Decoding
Orthographic automaticity, structured phonics and encoding, syllable work, and morphology.
One architecture. One faculty. One student.
Signal Reading gives every teacher the same diagnostic language for reading—so the science teacher, English teacher, interventionist, and special-education coordinator can see the same learner clearly and act together.
The coordination problem
Schools are rarely short on effort, programs, or data. The breakdown happens between classrooms. One team sees a decoding problem. Another sees motivation. A third sees missing background knowledge. The learner receives separate responses to one braided problem.
Signal Reading augments the instruction a district already owns. It gives people a shared architecture for locating barriers, choosing supports, and capturing useful evidence across a faculty.
The four-rope framework
The ropes are analytically distinct and instructionally interdependent. A barrier in one increases support there; it does not suspend work in the others.
Orthographic automaticity, structured phonics and encoding, syllable work, and morphology.
Vocabulary, syntax, background knowledge, connected reading, and the construction of meaning.
Attention, working memory, cognitive load, retrieval, self-regulation, and purposeful strategy use.
Written and spoken output that develops from sentence-level clarity through sustained authorship.
One vocabulary across MTSS
Tier 1 and Tier 2 should not feel like separate systems. Signal Reading carries the same diagnostic language from a content-area lesson into targeted intervention.
Teachers use one text with calibrated entry points, brief decoding preparation, cognitive prompts, and an expressive task that makes understanding visible.
Explore Tier 1 →Converging assessment evidence locates the student across all four ropes. Sessions increase intensity without reducing reading to isolated drills.
Explore Tier 2 →Designed for real systems
A coherent literacy language without a wholesale program replacement.
A framework flexible enough for local models and clear enough to scale.
A practical way to connect classroom evidence, coaching, and intervention.
Preliminary practitioner evidence
In a single-school practitioner study of 17 secondary students, one quarter of Signal Reading intervention was associated with gains in GPA across classes and approximately 2.2 grade levels on NWEA MAP. The study used a single-group pre/post design, with no control group, no randomization, and the program author as the sole teacher. These findings are preliminary. A stronger claim requires multi-site replication with a control condition.
